...............According to the Bureau of Justice, almost four in 10 violent crimes involve alcohol, as do four in 10 fatal automobile accidents. And about four in 10 criminal offenders report that they were using alcohol at the time of their offense. Each year 183,000 (37 percent) rapes and sexual assaults involve alcohol use by the offender, as do just over 197,000 (15 percent) of robberies, about 661,000 (27 percent) aggravated assaults and nearly 1.7 million (25 percent) simple assaults.
So even though you personally choose not to drink, you could die any day at the hands of a drunk person, through rape, murder, robbery or most likely through a car accident. In the case of drunk driving though, I must admit that there are countless commercials on television that show the individual lives that have been taken by drunk drivers. Speaking of commercials, the way in which alcohol use is promoted on TV is completely despicable. The Budweiser beer ads have helped to popularize beer to the extent that little kids, grandmothers, and even my own parents enthusiastically quip, "WASSSSAAAP!" The guys from the original commercial have become celebrities and have appeared on shows like "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" to flaunt their signature remark.
Nobody seems to realize that Budweiser is on the winning end of such successful advertisements, which only encourage further alcohol use in our society. Images that link alcohol use with popularity and physical attractiveness, and with desirable outcomes such as success, relaxation, romance and adventure are partly to blame for the prevalent practice of alcohol consumption in our society. You might be thinking, lighten up, the singing Budweiser frogs are cute, and though there might be a problem in our country with alcohol in regards to drunk driving and related crimes, the path of destruction ends there.

McCains to Profit on Anheuser, InBev Deal
T. W. Farnam reports on the presidential race.
Cindy McCain, wife of Republican presidential candidate John McCain, is set to get a huge payout from the sale of Anheuser-Busch Cos., brewer of Budweiser and hundreds of other brands, to Belgian beverage giant InBev NV.
Hensley and Co., founded by Cindy McCain’s father, has an exclusive distribution deal for Budweiser and other products in the Phoenix area.
While many distributors around the country are ending exclusive deals, Hensley has so-far remained in a strong pairing with Anheuser, though it would likely do just fine picking up other brands under a non-exclusive relationship, said Joe Thompson, president of the Independent Beverage Group, a market-analysis firm.

Innocent Criminals

In United States, over 11 million children are victims of alcohol and/or drug abuse by the parents.. !
Most people think that children with alcoholic parents inevitably become alcoholics or drug addicts when they grow up. However, people seldom consider the fact that that addiction can be stopped, and that users can be cured…even be successful.
Today, in America, there are millions of individuals who have been impacted by substance abuse while in utero. Substance abuse during pregnancy impedes the normal, healthy development of the fetus brain.
The effects become apparent in during childhood and very well into adulthood, when behavioral problems manifest and increase if untreated. Many times, the problems manifest as disorders of impulse control which sometimes translate into episodes of violence. Additionally, many of these individuals experience forms of auditory and/or visual hallucination.
Unfortunately, today many of these individuals because of their unusual behaviors are being misdiagnosed with ADHD. As a result, they are prescribed Ritalin or some other kind of stimulant. Such stimulants, when mis-prescribed, exacerbate rather than improve their psychological and behavioral problems.
The majority of these individuals are very smart. However, as a result of their exposure to harmful substances during their fetal development, which is later compounded by the damaging effects of misdiagnoses, they are never offered a real chance at life.
I worked in several clinics where I encountered countless children and adolescents that suffered from these problems. Time and time again, they told me that they had been diagnosed as having ADHD for years and were prescribed stimulants (such as Ritalin). Yet, they admitted that their behavior and psychological problems persisted. In my thorough evaluation of each patient, I found that at least 80 percent of them did not have ADHD, but rather had forms of brain damage—many of which were caused by exposure to substances while in utero or during breast feeding.
Society attaches a terrible stigma to persons experiencing behavioral/psychological problems. Because of this stigma, it has become conventionally more acceptable for professionals to render a diagnosis of ADHD rather than acknowledge the existence of a more serious underlying condition. Similarly, patients and their parents find a diagnosis of ADHD to be more palatable than a more serious one. (Perhaps, even, parents do not want to admit that their actions directly caused their children’s disorders.)
This leads to the question of why no one is making more probative diagnosis? Rarely do psychiatrists or psychologists ask patients whether they see or hear things that others do not see or hear. Certainly, children fear admitting that they hear voices or see things( Auditory and Visual Hallucination), believing that that their parents, friends, siblings, teachers, and even doctors will label them as “crazy.”
If attitudes of society and the medical communities do not change soon, we will encounter a violent, psychotic new generation. The media has been highlighting this problem for years now each time they cover stories about a shooting rampage at a school, in the streets, or in the home without clarifying the real cause of their
problems.
We too often point the finger of blame without considering the psychological
reasons for the violence. Some times, the ill persom may follow the destructive commands of these voices.
Perhaps, if we considered the latter and emphasized a societal discussion about psychologicaleffects on damaged brain, awareness could be raised and efforts could be initiated by communities to find solutions.
We have taken similar approaches with many diseases, such as AIDS, cancer research, diabetes, etc. Just as with any other medical condition, early diagnosis, early prevention and education will help find solutions.
If you care. If you expect better society for future, please join me in this battle and the mission to treat them properly, educate them in right way for a drug free society.

Living Healthy in Toxic World

The link between alcohol/drugs and violence/aggression has been documented in scientific studies and research as a fact. In the U.S., there are annually: A total of 3.2 million arrests for alcohol and other drug related crimes, which account for 1/3 of total arrests in the United States.
1.3 million arrests for DUI
800,000 arrests for illicit drug violations
700,000 arrests for drunkenness
427,000 arrests for liquor law violations
It is estimated that 6.6 million children under the age of 18 years live in households with at least one alcoholic parent. These children are at risk for a range of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral problems. Although it is impossible to place a monetary value on the human lives destroyed by drug abuse, the economic loss on society can be evaluated by examining (1) the vast amount of private income transferred to the purchase of alcohol and drugs; and (2) government revenue spent on welfare, disability, drug treatment, court trials, and the incarceration of 3.2 million people resulting from illegal and toxic substance abuse. Unfortunately, this is not the end. People who suffer from alcohol and chemical dependency ordinarily do not stop using after they suffer the consequences described above. As the current rate of relapse is over 88%, the cycle of use will continue; without proper intervention, people suffering from alcohol and chemical dependency will find themselves locked in a labyrinth with very little hope of escape.

Dr. S. Peele ( with his permission)In the Belly of the American Society of Addiction Medicine Beast
A first-person description of how the founder of ASAM, G. Douglas Talbott, regularly violates patient rights and standard medical ethics, while threatening patients and driving many to the brink of despair — and beyond. Meanwhile, the ASAM stands casually by.
G. Douglas Talbott is the founder of America's premier medical organization for the treatment of addiction — the American Society of Addiction Medicine, "The nation's medical specialty society dedicated to educating physicians and improving the treatment of individuals suffering from alcoholism or other addictions." He has been president of the organization — most recently from 1997 to April 1999 — after which he has continued to serve as a member of ASAM's Board. ....................................
One professional has offered his first person experiences for SPAWS readers, out of his desire to blow the whistle on this monstrous, ongoing assault on patient rights, often involving highly vulnerable individuals.
Jack Wright entered Talbott's program (then called the Talbott-Marsh Recovery Campus, which Mr. Wright treatment, which he found trivial, demeaning, coercive, and often unethical. Wright wrote to Talbott:
During my stay at Talbott-Marsh, I observed rule violations being used as examples of "diseased" behavior (a majority of our "therapy" time was devoted to addressing the pathological implications of trivial rule violations). .........................................................................
Do you see the irony here? More importantly, do you see how this approach reinforces the myth that alcoholics and drug addicts are morally defective and incapable of adjusting to life — the very notion that your research (and numerous studies) directly contradict? Considering the high level of intelligence of most of your clients, this heavy handed double talk not only reinforces the moral approach to this disease (a notion that you ostensibly reject), it sets up a coercive dynamic whereby any non-compliant resident is labeled and pathologized as he naturally tries to sift through the moral imperatives and considerable demonstrations of authority that he is confronted with. As one of my peers aptly exclaimed: "This is a holy war!" .............
In this respect, please consider the following (true) example: One of my peers at TMRC was mandated to complete treatment at your facility or have his license revoked (he was a doctor). . . . when his wife arrived for family week, she was asked to take a urine test (she was never informed that this was a possibility before she made expensive arrangements to participate in this program). She refused to do so (which is her right). My peer was then told that she was no longer welcome on the premises and denied visitation with someone he loved dearly. Then, the ax fell: He was told that she must obtain an addiction assessment at your facility. In addition, he was told that he would not obtain advocacy if he returned to his wife after completing treatment (unless, of course, she got involved in an acceptable recovery program). For weeks, I witnessed this young man experience anguish and stress that I could not have imagined, as their relationship was pushed to the brink of divorce. ......................................................................
Apparently worried that Wright might take his complaints farther, Talbott responded graciously: "The purpose of this letter was to simply thank you and tell you of my appreciation of you [sic] sending the letter to me. I did not find it caustic or hostile, but found it very helpful. . . . I will continue to review your letter to see if we can put into place and expedite some of the suggestions you have made. Thank you for caring enough to write me this letter." ..............................................
