In United States, over 11 million children are victims of alcohol and/or drug abuse by the parents.. !
Most people think that children with alcoholic parents inevitably become alcoholics or drug addicts when they grow up. However, people seldom consider the fact that that addiction can be stopped, and that users can be cured…even be successful.
Today, in America, there are millions of individuals who have been impacted by substance abuse while in utero. Substance abuse during pregnancy impedes the normal, healthy development of the fetus brain.
The effects become apparent in during childhood and very well into adulthood, when behavioral problems manifest and increase if untreated. Many times, the problems manifest as disorders of impulse control which sometimes translate into episodes of violence. Additionally, many of these individuals experience forms of auditory and/or visual hallucination.
Unfortunately, today many of these individuals because of their unusual behaviors are being misdiagnosed with ADHD. As a result, they are prescribed Ritalin or some other kind of stimulant. Such stimulants, when mis-prescribed, exacerbate rather than improve their psychological and behavioral problems.
The majority of these individuals are very smart. However, as a result of their exposure to harmful substances during their fetal development, which is later compounded by the damaging effects of misdiagnoses, they are never offered a real chance at life.
I worked in several clinics where I encountered countless children and adolescents that suffered from these problems. Time and time again, they told me that they had been diagnosed as having ADHD for years and were prescribed stimulants (such as Ritalin). Yet, they admitted that their behavior and psychological problems persisted. In my thorough evaluation of each patient, I found that at least 80 percent of them did not have ADHD, but rather had forms of brain damage—many of which were caused by exposure to substances while in utero or during breast feeding.
Society attaches a terrible stigma to persons experiencing behavioral/psychological problems. Because of this stigma, it has become conventionally more acceptable for professionals to render a diagnosis of ADHD rather than acknowledge the existence of a more serious underlying condition. Similarly, patients and their parents find a diagnosis of ADHD to be more palatable than a more serious one. (Perhaps, even, parents do not want to admit that their actions directly caused their children’s disorders.)
This leads to the question of why no one is making more probative diagnosis? Rarely do psychiatrists or psychologists ask patients whether they see or hear things that others do not see or hear. Certainly, children fear admitting that they hear voices or see things( Auditory and Visual Hallucination), believing that that their parents, friends, siblings, teachers, and even doctors will label them as “crazy.”
If attitudes of society and the medical communities do not change soon, we will encounter a violent, psychotic new generation. The media has been highlighting this problem for years now each time they cover stories about a shooting rampage at a school, in the streets, or in the home without clarifying the real cause of their
problems.
We too often point the finger of blame without considering the psychological
reasons for the violence. Some times, the ill persom may follow the destructive commands of these voices.
Perhaps, if we considered the latter and emphasized a societal discussion about psychologicaleffects on damaged brain, awareness could be raised and efforts could be initiated by communities to find solutions.
We have taken similar approaches with many diseases, such as AIDS, cancer research, diabetes, etc. Just as with any other medical condition, early diagnosis, early prevention and education will help find solutions.
